About the project
METIO partnered with Rawa Community School to design and build a multi-purpose sports facility in the Kunawarritji community, Martu country, East Pilbara, Western Australia . METIO managed the project from start to completion, including METIO led project development, including facilitating community consultations, writing grants and securing funding, design coordination, tendering, and managing all contractors.
The project was 100% grant funded, with support from:
AISWA - Association of Independent Schools Western Australia through the Australian Government Capital Grants Program (CGP)
Department of Local Government, sports and Cultural Industries, Western Australia
A team of consultants, EIW architects, ARUP, and Fourlandscape Studio provided Rawa Community School with pro bono design services. The project was completed in March 2023.
Local artists
The sports facility features the work of local Martu artists Bugai Whyoulter, Kumpaya Girgirba, Rosie Williams, Nora Wompi, Nora Ngangapa, and Dulcie Gibbs. Their work can also be seen at Martumilli Art Center in Newman.
This project has been shortlisted for the 2023 ArchitectureAU Award for Social Impact.
